What is estimate
A quantity surveying estimation is computation or calculation of quantity required and expenses likely to be incurred in the construction work. The main objective of quantity estimate is to know the cost of the work. If the estimated cost is greater than the funds available, attempts are made to reduce the cost by changing the specifications or by reducing the work.
What type of data is required in the preparation of estimate?
The following data are required to prepare an estimate
- Complete and fully dimensioned plan and section of project (building).
- Detailed specifications.
- Rates of various items of work.

How the earth work is considered while preparing the estimate?
It consist of earth work in excavation and in filling which are worked out separately under different items in cu m and paid @ per cu m. Earth work in excavation of foundation is calculated by taking length and breadth of each trench from the plan and height from the section. The walls of trenches will be vertical.
Lm x Bmx Hm = cum.
Earth filling or sand filling is calculated by taking the internal dimensions of the rooms minus plinth offsets which are generally Sem each and height is taken from the bottom of floor to the ground level (G.L.). If the internal length and breadth of the room are 4.20mx3.60m, then the length and breadth of filling between Plinth will be 4.20m-(5cm + 5cm) 4.10m and 3.60-(5cm + 5cm)= 3.50m.
